YouTube video angers family of suspected Pickton victim

By Jeremy Nuttall Dec 13 2007

A video posted to YouTube has sparked emotion from at least one relative of a woman missing from the Downtown Eastside.

Dawn Crey went missing in 2000; her DNA was found on convicted serial killer Robert Pickton’s farm in Port Coquitlam, but Pickton was never charged with her death. Her brother, Ernie, said the sentencing of Pickton on six counts of second-degree murder this week was hard enough, but, on Tuesday night, it became more emotional. A family member sent Crey a link to a video on YouTube that features a comedian singing a song called “The Ballad of Bobby Pickton.” The song pokes fun at the case of the killer and his victims, most of whom were drug-addicted prostitutes from the DTES. “I was really disappointed that [the comedian] would turn to that topic,” said Crey. “It was poor form and it was disgusting.”

The video has been on the site since February. It features comedian Richard Lett, and is said to have been filmed at the Roxy nightclub in Vancouver. Lett begins by making some stand-up jokes related to DNA found on the farm. “I went out to Port Coquitlam and picked up some garden soil from the pig farm,” Lett says in the video. “Flowers are blooming already: one of them has a tattoo. The zucchini tastes like Lucky beer.”

He then begins the song with the backing of an oompah-style accordion. The song’s lyrics tell of a day in the life of Pickton delivering pig meat, then going to pick up a prostitute on the Downtown Eastside, then murdering her at his farm. “The rope was tight / The knife was sharp / She barely felt a thing,” Lett sings. “Bobby kicked up the generator, and began... processing.”

Lett also makes reference to how the media and police didn’t pay attention to the missing women for a while, which allowed Pickton to continue the crimes for which he was sentenced. For most of the video, the audience doesn’t laugh. “It didn’t show any sensitivity at all,” said Crey, “and I don’t think he cared about what the families of the victims are going through at all.”

Crey doesn’t know if any of the other victims’ families have seen the video. However, he’s certain they would have already spoken up about it if they had seen it. The entire video lasts about six minutes. At the end of the song, Lett receives some applause. “Thank you, you sick fucks,” he says to the crowd.

WE was unable to reach Lett for this article before press time.
